The Villanova Rugby Club was founded in November of 1959 by Frances Coghlan, a professor at the university. The first team was comprised mainly of his students that he “enticed” to come to practice. With little support from the University, Coghlan pushed ahead and founded what was then the Main Line Rugby Club. The program gained momentum in the spring of 1960 as forty players filled the roster. The club faced mostly Ivy League teams in the Eastern Rugby Union. Their competition had the advantage of South Africans, New Zealanders, Brits, and other Europeans with rugby experience. Coughlan’s team, however, consisted of all but one American. In 1961 The Brown Daily Herald (Brown University) noted in 1961 that the Villanova squad was an Un-Rugby team, as it was undefeated, untied, and unscored on. Villanova RFC was coached and started by Professor Frances Coghlan, the father of rugby in the Philadelphia area. As an unsactioned club sport the Wildcats had to call itself the Main Line RFC without use of the Villanova name. They were also undefeated at 5-0, having averaged 33 points per contest against Manhattan RFC, Penn, Boston RFC, and Westchester RFC (NY). To determine the champion of Division III (1961) Villanova won a playoff 22-9 against Columbia, the last Ivy League school to start a rugby club.” Villanova’s point record that year was 156-14!
1966-submitted by Pete Conserva-THANK YOU!
In 1966, the Villanova rugby team went undefeated in both fall and
spring seasons. Playing against such teams as Brown,Carnegie-Mellon, Harvard, Old Blue(nyc), Notre Dame, Jefferson Med School, Penn,Yale, Fairfield (CT)and a few more. I'd have to check the yearbook. Players included, Capt. Dick Gove, Vic Sarkissian, John Thomas, Mike Cain, and myself (Peter Conserva). Some others include, Steve Carney,Don Donlan, Prentiss Yancey and many more. We fielded two 15 man teams and sometimes a third side. It was popular and pretty physical. The coach was Francis Coughlin ,a super guy! If any old guys see this.....chip in with more names and details. Great memories...... tempered by the loss of five or six members killed in action in Viet Nam in late 1967 and 1968! More to come!! Please send any club history information to the site contact. Thank you! |
